Analysis and review of sources show that there are many scientific works on the translation of humor, the number of which is constantly growing, since language also does not stop its development. The theoretical basis for typological units of humorous material was laid by the works of A. Naumenko, T. Kiyak, S. Gardner, A. R. Gabidullina and M. V. Zharikova, J. Hoffman, J. Vandele, O. Vorobyova, R. Grutman and others; the issues of translation transformations for humor were highlighted by D. Delabastita, T. Kiyak, O. Ogui, A. Naumenko. The problems of translating humor were noted in their works by E. Bates and R. Giora.
Humor performs various functions: it helps people establish contacts, resolve disputes, and reduce tension in communication. It improves people’s moral and mental health, as it promotes relaxation and fills them with positive emotions. Since there have been many troubles in the world recently, more and more people are looking for joy and lightheartedness in movies, cartoons, and TV shows that have a comical tone. Accordingly, the film industry is trying to satisfy people’s demand and more and more entertaining works of cinema appear. In this regard, there is a need for high-quality translation of comics that will be understandable and accessible to all viewers. However, the translation of comics requires more detailed study and further development. Thus, the topicality of this study lies in the insufficient study of the features of comic translation, as well as in the growing number of fans of entertainment works of the film industry who need high-quality Ukrainian translation.
Object of the paper is american sitcom "The Middle". The subject is Features of reproducing humor in the English-language sitcom "The Middle" using the Ukrainian language.
Objectives of the paper:
- to investigate the nature and features of humor as a translation problem;
- to describe approaches to the classification of humorous expressions;
- to clarify the features of translating English humor into Ukrainian;
- to determine the reproduction of humor in English-Ukrainian translation: translation techniques;
- to analyze the means of expressing humor in translation as illustrated by the material of The Middle sitcom.
Methods. To study the theoretical material, the method of analysis and synthesis was used to study the concept of humor and its main features. Consideration and analysis of various approaches to the classification of humor itself, its types, linguistic and extra-linguistic means of expression was achieved with reference to the descriptive-comparative method and the induction method. These methods were also used to describe the main approaches to the classification of communicative strategies and tactics. Quantitative analysis of the original and translated texts was used to determine the most frequent ways of reproducing humor in translation.
The novelty of the coursework lies in the fact that for the first time, a comprehensive study of the implementation of means of expressing humorous statements was conducted on the material of the sitcom "The Middle".
The practical value of the research is seen in its further application for the study of humor and the features of its reproduction in the fields of sociology, psychology, comparative linguistics, philosophy, and pragmatics.
The introduction focuses upon the choice of the research topic and its relevance, formulates the task, defines the object, subject, and methods of the research, and highlights its scientific novelty and the practical significance of the results obtained.
The first chapter analyzes approaches to defining the nature and features of humor as a translation problem, describes approaches to the classification of humorous expressions, and considers features of translating English humor into Ukrainian.
The second section analyzes the ways of reproducing strategies and tactics of humor in a sitcom using the Ukrainian language.
The conclusions present the main results of the research, formulate conclusions, and outline prospects for further study of the problem.
