Ethical Issue on Physical Restraint Patient in IMH (Institute of Mental Health) Introduction Providing efficient and effective patient care requires nurses to stick to the specified healthcare and ethical standards (Bohomol, 2019). Ethical principles help nurses regardless of their type to enforce the right judgment about the form of care their patients should receive. In addition to the nursing laws, they guide them to make or uphold daily activities. The Scotland Nursing Board, for instance, provides midwives and nurses with the correct Code of Conduct on how they should interact with other professionals as well as take care of their patients (Lu et al. 2019). Every day the nurses should comply with the regulatory standards purporting them to effectively take care of their patients. It is part and parcel of their legal duty to behave professionally even when faced with ethical dilemmas. Some of the ethical theories nurses can apply when faced with various ethical dilemmas are the principles of autonomy, justice, beneficence, and non-maleficence. Even in today's world, the principle of autonomy enables us to ensure those around us make decisions oriented on their values (Daniel and Daniel, 2020). Nurses based on such reasoning, must thus obtain the informed consent of their patients. It is important to respect their patient autonomy. The principle of justice requires nurses to address the patient as human regardless of the prevailing circumstances (Oben, 2020). The fundamental needs and rights of the patients should be respected. The beneficence principle helps nurses implement measures benefiting the patients. Thus, even when faced with a dilemma, nurses should implement practices that are best for the patient. Besides, it enables them to treat their patients in an ethical manner not only by respecting the ordained decisions they hold but also make an effort in securing their well-being (Zoshak and Dew, 2021). This essay uses the case of Mr. Johnson to discuss an ethical issue connected with physical restraint at the Institute of Mental Health. Ethical Case Scenario Mr. Johnson is a forty-two-year-old individual, unmarried and living with his parents. Three years ago, Johnson was detected with mania. As a form of mental illness, mania emerges when one is experiencing difficult life conditions. In Mr. Johnson's case, he was experiencing problems with housing, money, and loneliness. All those have been causing serious sleep loss in Johnson's life resulting in triggering episodes of mania. Mr. Johnson thus takes lithium carbonate tablets regularly. They are prescribed medicine known as mood-stabilizing agents and treat manic episodes in addition to any long-term bipolar treatment. However, Mr. Johnson does not take the medicine anymore as he claims that he is fully recovered. This is opposite to what he was instructed by the general practitioner back then. He was to take the stabilizers after every two weeks.
