In our time of dynamic development, the problem of translating proper names remains relevant, because cultural development and technical progress contribute, on the one hand, to the spread of specific names beyond the boundaries of a certain culture, and on the other hand, to the emergence of new names that require adequate translation. It is worth emphasizing the importance of the problem of translating proper names in social and political texts, because these texts are a means of propaganda and a tool of political struggle.
For any translator, the translation of proper names is, on the one hand, interesting, and, on the other hand, difficult and responsible work, because insufficient knowledge of history, culture, social order, features of political life can be the cause of inadequate translation, which simply or will not be perceived by the recipient, or will be perceived, but not properly. The reason for the latter is that proper names are names that most vividly reflect the distinctiveness of the culture or political life of the host nation. Features of culture, politics, social life, etc. may be unknown to a certain person from another country, and it is here that all responsibility for a translation that is understandable to a person falls on the translator.
The aim of this work is to systematize approaches to the translation of proper names.
The implementation of this aim involves solving the objectives:
- to explore the concept and characteristics of onymus;
- to determine the typology of proper names;
- to find out the peculiarities of the translation of proper names in socio-political texts;
- to characterize the methodology and principles of research on the translation of proper names;
- to analyze the translation of proper names in social and political texts.
The object of this work is proper names in social and political texts.
The subject of this work is methods of translating proper names in social and political texts.
The following research methods were used to implement the tasks in the work: analysis, comparison, systematization and descriptive method.
The research material is 28 proper names taken from newspaper articles "The Guardian".
The scientific novelty of the work is due to the fact that the methods of reproduction of English proper names in the Ukrainian language were analyzed on the material of the newspaper "The Guardian" and the frequency of their use was determined.
The course work consists of an introduction, two chapters, conclusions and a list of used sources. The total volume of the work is 29 pages, of which 24 pages of the main text.
In the first chapter, the basic theory related to proper names, journalistic literature and methods of their translation is presented. The second section consists of a practical part, it gives examples of translation of groups of proper names found in the newspaper under study.
