The author emphasizes Mrs. General’s extreme commitment to proprieties. It should be pointed out that after her husband’s death, Mrs. General finds out that she has been deceived by him and that she inherits nothing in the long run. It is also stressed that being a widow, Mrs. General decides to help some rich young lady to improve her manners.
